The education subgroup of Fingal CYPSC has developed a practical workbook for 6th class students transferring to secondary school.
The workbook entitled 'Looking Back Looking Forward' is an excellent resource designed to support students with the transition to secondary school in a COVID 19 era.
Members of the education sub group include
- Tusla Education Support Services (TESS: Education Welfare Officers and School Completion Programme),
- The Irish Primary Principals Network (IPPN),
- The National Association of Principals and Deputies (NAPD),
- Foróige,
- Empower (A Local Development Company),
- Dublin and Dun Laoighaire Education and Training Board (DDLETB),
- Health Service Executive (HSE)
- Blanchardstown Community Training Centre (CTC).
Beginning secondary school is a key moment in a child’s life, there can be joy and worry in equal measure. COVID 19 brought unprecedented challenges in supporting the transition from primary school to secondary school. It might have been especially hard for young students who may not have had the chance to say goodbye to primary school friends and teachers in person.
Big events like religious ceremonies, graduations and other celebrations will have been missed. This book has been put together to help with some of the feelings surrounding these challenges. Never before have young people had to take this journey without the physical presence and support of their peers and teachers. Fingal CYPSC were keen to develop a document that would act as a resource for the young student leaving primary school and starting secondary school and for the educators supporting this transition.

The workbook was delivered to over 400 young people in the Dublin 15 area. It was also made available on the Fingal CYPSC Local Resources webpage so is accessible to all schools in the county and further afield.
