Waterford launches Plan

Waterford Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC) launched its Children and Young People's Plan '19 - '22 in City Hall, Waterford.  The overall purpose of  Waterford CYPSC is to ensure better outcomes for children and young people through enhanced co-ordination of local services and organisations.

Waterford's Plan was launched by Mayor John Pratt.  Also in attendance were Mr Peter Kearns Disability Activist and Mr Vincent Daly Chairperson of Waterford CYPSC and Area Manager of Tusla Child and Family Agency for Waterford and Wexford.

Speaking at the launch Mr Daly congratulated all those involved.                Julie Somers, Waterford CYPSC Co-ordinator, highlighted the collaborative work that has been ongoing over the past number of years in support of children and young people's development and opportunity, and outlined the actions and plans to be undertaken by the inter-agency committee up to 2022. 

Mr Peter Kearns spoke about Disability Inclusion and Equality and the need for a social model applying an emancipatory-advocacy approach of thinking and practice for and with disabled people.

Declan O Driscoll from Waterford and South Tipperary Community Youth Service  led those assembled through a showcase of a number of Waterford's successful inter-agency projects including

  • The Just Grow Healthy Ireland Project
  • Know Your Stuff Sexual Health Booklet
  • Trauma Informed Practice in Schools
  • Infant Mental Health training
  • Disability Inclusion Framework and
  • A Service Needs Analysis Report focusing on 18 – 24 year olds.

Mayor Pratt rounded off the morning’s event by commending all of the agencies and groups active in supporting children, young people and families in Waterford for their ongoing work.  Voicing  strong support for all agencies' contribution to the Plan he encouraged everyone to capitalise on the opportunities presented by CYPSC.

The launch was attended by over 80 professionals who work in diverse sectors from early years through to young adult supports and parental support throughout Waterford.  A number of  Comhairle Na nÓg (Waterford Youth Council) members were also in attendance.
