Cork has launched parenting support leaflets providing practical advice to help parents support their child’s social and emotional wellbeing.

Tusla – Child and Family Agency and Cork Children and Young People's Services Committee (CYPSC) in conjunction with Barnardos launched parenting guides to help parents navigate their child’s social and emotional wellbeing. The leaflets which are aimed at parents and carers provide information and guidance to help create positive, loving and supportive relationships between them and their children. They also offer tools and support to help parents to be better equipped to deal with some tough situations if they arise, as they sometimes do!

The leaflets' concept stemmed from Cork CYPSC in their plans to respond to the needs of children and young people in Cork. They were developed following a consultation process carried out with parents in Cork which identified gaps in parenting supports in Cork city and county. The development work was led by Cork CYPSC Supporting Parents Sub-group with the aim of identifying universal supports which would help parents in the county.

Following the consulations with parents the Sub- group also developed a number of workshops called ‘Help Your Child to Navigate Their Social and Emotional Wellbeing – A Practical Guide for Parents’. These are universal workshops for parents and carers of children aged 0 to 24 years and will become available across Cork.

Speaking about the launch, Barry Murray, Area Manager at Tusla Child and Family Agency and Chairperson of Cork CYPSC said:

“The 'Help Your Child to Navigate Their Social and Emotional Wellbeing' programme was developed in response to an identified need in the area. Cork parents told us that they didn’t have enough support or access to evidence based, sound advice on how to deal with their child’s emotional and social wellbeing. The development of the programme was a long process but what we’ve learned is that parents are looking for a safe-zone where they can learn practical tools to deal with the challenges that daily life brings.”
