In developing their three-year strategic plans CYPSC undertake to consult with children and young people. This happens in a variety of ways across different counties and includes work with each county’s Comhairle na nÓg (Child and Youth Council). The role and involvement of children and young people in CYPSC is to be strengthened and developed going forward.

In June 2015 the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) launched the 'National Strategy on Children and Young People’s Participation in Decision-making 2015 – 2020'. The purpose of the strategy is to ensure that children and young people in Ireland have a voice in decision-making that affects their lives. The strategy includes five commitments that particularly relate to Children and Young People’s Services Committees. One of those commitments states:

'Guidance on engaging children and young people in decision-making in the work of Children and Young People’s Services Committees [CYPSCs] will be developed by DCYA in consultation with CYPSCs.' (G21.3, p. 52)

DCYA will convene a Reference Group to commence work on the development of guidance for CYPSCs. The Reference Group will comprise of personnel from DCYA, Comhairle na nÓg, local CYPSC and the National Co-ordinator for CYPSC. A first meeting will be held in November 2015.
