Roscommon CYPSC and Galway CYPSC recently launched initiatives to support the transition of children from pre-school to primary school called “This is Me”.

These transition initiatives successfully piloted in 2015 are the result of interagency collaboration between pre-school providers, County Childcare Committees and Tusla-Child and Family Agency.

The purpose of the “This is Me” booklet is to promote an easy transition for children from pre-school to primary school.  It assists early years practitioners to record in the child’s “This is Me” booklet information about what the child can do by the time they are leaving pre-school. This precious booklet is then shared with the Junior Infant teacher whose class the child will be starting primary school in.  The booklet then helps the teacher to get to know each child coming in to their class.

What’s in the booklet?

It provides information for the Junior Infant teacher on a child’s achievements in pre-school, based on the Aistear Curriculum. The information provides a holistic image of the child and focuses on the positive ability and capacity of each child, using child friendly language.  Parental participation is encouraged in completing the booklet and parental consent is required to transfer the information from the pre-school to the primary school.

Once noted by the teacher, the booklet is given to the parent to provide a keepsake record of their child’s time in pre-school.

It is hoped that all children making the transition from pre-school to primary school in Roscommon and in Galway this year will do so with the support of “This is Me”.

Pre-school providers can get copies of the “This is Me” booklets from their local County Childcare Committee in either Roscommon or in Galway.

The initiative is supported for 2016 by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and booklets are available free of charge to pre-school providers.
